With its extensive documentation of activities, this publication substantiates the “four pillars” from the time of the Az W’s founding: presenting, discussing, publishing and archiving architecture.
Since its foundation, the Az W has established itself as the first and only address for the preservation of the cultural architectural heritage with the scientific processing of preliminary and posthumous estates of the most important architects of the second half of the 20th century. Museologically suitable premises are indispensable for presenting architectural education at the highest level to visitors. In recent years, a museum debate has broken out again in Austria, in the course of which the orientation of the individual museums has become a topic of discussion. A clear cultural-political distinction must be made between architecture and building culture, which determine all of our lives, and the institutions of purely visual art, and architecture, its safeguarding as cultural heritage, and its contemporary research and mediation must be granted a place of their own. It is a cultural-political decision of the Republic whether it is aware of the whole question of architecture and building culture as a concern and problem of the future viability of this state.
