The Wien River Valley
With: Erich Raith, Alfons Oberhofer, Gernot Ladinig, Mario Terzic
The Wien River Valley runs along the Wien river from the Viennese forest down to the Danube Canal and is structured in a number of sections characterized by various different planning approaches, by overarching and regulation projects. Ever since the time of Otto Wagner’s urban masterplan for Vienna, the Wien River Valley has not been considered as a continuous stretch of urban landscape, but as a patchwork of fairly inconsistent planning concepts.
Issues and projects following the river on its way across the city to the Danube Canal include waste-water problems and different water levels which make it difficult to develop the regulated river bank into a urban recreation area, and range from renaturalization projects to various more or less scurrilous projects as well as interesting architectural solutions. What are the current and future projects for the Wien River Valley? The latest developments will be discussed in wednesdays 21.
As part of the ”Science Week Austria”, the Department of Urban Architecture and Planning (Vienna University of Technology) offers a tour of the Wien River Valley on 16 May 2001, 2 p.m. Information and bookings: www.stb.tuwien.ac.at
