The Publication of The Austrian Phenomenon. Architektur Avantgarde Österreich 1956 – 1973 is to provide the first comprehensive survey of this significant movement in one volume.
All of the projects researched are presented in context with images and text in conjunction with reproductions of historical documents, exhibition catalogues, and magazine and newspaper articles, in over 1,000 pages of documentation. This compendium is supplemented by a collection of selected texts in the form of a commentary, to document not only the socio-cultural context of the time but also to provide an international perspective of this group. Almost 50 years on, we can only attempt be compile a study of this key movement in the history of Austrian architecture to the best of our abilities. With an introductory lecture by the Italian architect Gianni Pettena, a short film presentation, with projects like ‘Gelbes Herz’ (Yellow Heart) and the following book presentation, art and architecture from the years 1956 to 1973 are brought together to instil new life into a key phenomenon, not only for the Austrian avant-garde.
