Two Landmarks in Floridsdorf
Car free city
21st district, Nordmanngasse 25
ArchitektInnen: LSSS Cornelia Schindler, Rudolf Szedenik
“compact-city”
21st district, Donaufelderstraße 101
Architects: BUSarchitektur: Rainer Lalics / Claudio Blazica / Laura Spinadel / Mladen Jadric
Situated in the direct vicinity of the Frauen-Werk-Stadt (women’s workshop), the two estates show new paths to be taken in solving the spatial separation of the social reality of living somewhere and working. The project Homeworkers, which won the 2nd Otto-Wagner-Prize for urban development in 1998, has now very nearly reached completion as ‘compact-city’. The escalators link the residential levels, studios, offices and industrial boxes, drive-in, supermarket and allotments and terrace onto the street. Anyone who does have to ‘pursue’ their jobs has a few alternatives to going by foot in the car-free zone: a comprehensive network of cycle paths; good connections to the buses, tram and U-Bahn (metro), as well as carpool facilities. The carpark is to become a biotope!
