The City of Vienna has developed a new, dense urban quarter with cooperatives and a private real estate company on the former industrial site in Atzgersdorf. The atmospheric Centre is a factory for crates and timber goods completed by Hubert Gessner in 1913.
From 1966 to 2013, Bestattung Wien (the City of Vienna municipal undertakers) produced coffins in the factory, part of which is a listed building. A subsequent interim use showed the great potential for cultural uses of the hall and the grounds. SHIBUKAWA EDER ARCHITECTS won the competition in 2019 with a project that symbolically complements the historic industrial building, where culture continues to find a place alongside office use. The newly expanded factory also forms a social centre for the adjoining neighbourhood, which was developed in cooperation by two property developers and two architectural firms (Dietrich Untertrifaller and Schenker Salvi Weber) and includes 430 subsidised flats, commercial space and a dedicated studio building. A school centre by Baumschlager Eberle Architekten completes the new quarter.
