Public Walk 1: Behind the Wall
what we say when nobody is looking
A series of 4 Public Walks accompanies the exhibition, each of which begins with a brief guided tour of the exhibition by the curator and then continues in public space.
As in all parts of the city, people with a wide variety of viewpoints are empowering themselves around the MQ by applying their messages in public space. Numerous graffiti elicit responses, representing communication between absent people. What can be read in this frequently original and expressive pithy format on walls and street furniture later frequently goes on to become social consensus. This walk along the writing on the walls is intended to show that the production of text graffiti is not primarily about vandalism but about the message it conveys.
