In 2012 the project “Freie Mitte – Vielseitiger Rand” by STUDIOVLAY (Bernd Vlay/Lina Streeruwitz) won the urban planning ideas competition for the north-western part of the Nordbahnhof (Northern Train Station) site. The project differs from the part of this development area that has already been built upon as it breaks up the block grid envisaged previously. Instead of this, the development density will be increased along the edges of the new area, creating room for an open space of provocative dimensions at the centre. Accompanied by an intensive participative process, the “Urban Nordbahnhof Planning Guidelines” were developed out of this concept— an important foundation for the built implementation. A discussion organised by the Az W is devoted to the joys and troubles, the hurdles and heroes of precisely this implementation in built form.
