WORKSHOP for children aged 6 and over
based on the exhibition: Idea and Phenomena. Steven Holl
at the Architekturzentrum Wien
The exhibition “Idea and Phenomena. Steven Holl” approaches the oeuvre of this New York based architect from different angles: watercolors and architectural models visualize Holl’s complex conceptional designing process, the presentation of realized architectural projects moves phenomena of the interplay of space, light and material into focus.
The Stone And The Feather or Bottles Of Light has been chosen by Steven Holl as the subtitle to his building to entice us into the realm of colour, form and light.
Natural phenomena concerning light are described on the basis of Holl’s water-colours and models, which also provide a brief introduction into general colour theory as well as the perception and analysis of forms and materials as a unified sensual experience.
The tour of the exhibition has been playfully conceived and is designed to encourage active dialogue. Once again, it is rounded-off with a practical part in which the children can discover their own creative potential in the setting offered by the exhibition.
THE DIDACTIC AIM
Natural phenomena like light and colour are described and analysed as the source of inspiration for Stephen Holl’s architecture. The architecture is perceived as a unified sensual experience, a complex manifestation consisting of individual elements such as materials, space and colour. Taking the space step for step, the individual pieces of information fit together to form a whole – training detailed perception.
