Quo vadis, A City of Two Million? How Do We Want to Live and Who Do We Want to Be?
Vienna has two million inhabitants (again), since last year. But what does being a cosmopolitan City Entail?
The capital of Austria is one of the fastest growing cities in the European Union and it is now the second largest city in the German-speaking world.
What (very different) ideas of the metropolis and metropolitan society are associated with this? Where is the city actually metropolitan, and can the answer to this question really only ever be “in the Gründerzeit neighbourhoods!”? Where is Vienna provincial? These questions concern not only the built environment and public space, but also urban society. How is growth changing the city, where is it noticeable, and what role do migration movements play in this growth? In short: What kind of urban society do we want to be?
