ADOLESCENT MILESTONES:
On 28 June 1993 the Az W was able to open its test operations on the grounds of what was then a building site for the future Museumsquartier, and within its first year of operation it had successfully proved its necessity. Following 8 years of provisional operation as an exhibition venue, the reopening followed in 2001 with 2000 sqm. The team, originally comprising 4 people, enlarged rapidly with the expansion of activities: the opening of the library, the purchase of the Achleitner Archiv, the cornerstone of the archives and the collection, the opening of the permanent exhibition ‘a_show’, the start of numerous educational programmes, the founding of the Architecture Lounge…
“The Architekturzentrum Wien is so good that one starts to wonder why it isn’t even better.” Hermann Czech, 1995
