Ottokar Uhl studied from 1950 to 1953 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Influenced by Konrad Wachsmann, the rationalisation of the planning process plays a core role in his architectural oeuvre. Later his attention shifted increasingly to social developments. From the 1970s the issue of occupant participation became key to Uhl’s work. In 1973 Uhl was called to the Chair for construction planning and design at Karlsruhe University, where he taught until 1994. The Architekturzentrum Wien took over Ottaker Uhl’s archives in 2001 and paid tribute to his work in a major retrospective held in 2005.

On 2.3.2011 Ottokar Uhl celebrates his 80th birthday. The occasion is celebrated with a presentation of three of his most significant projects, by former employees and project partners. A book published on his 80th birthday is presented on this evening: Bernhard Steger (Ed.), ‘Themen der Architektur z. B. Ottokar Uhl’, Löcker Verlag, Vienna 2011.
