The final evening of the Architektur.Film.Sommer 2016 is devoted to the notion of “home”. The films shown are about people who are rooted in a particular place and refuse to move out when they are no longer wanted or permitted to be there. While the illegal residents of Tschernobyl are not deterred even by life-threatening levels of radioactivity, the artists of the Kathputli Colony in New Delhi refuse to accept their supposed fate and actively resist an investor’s project.

THE BABUSHKAS OF CHERNOBYL

In the radioactive Dead Zone surrounding Chernobyl’s Reactor No. 4, a defiant community of women scratches out an existence on some of the most toxic land on Earth. They share this hauntingly beautiful but lethal landscape with an assortment of interlopers—scientists, soldiers, and even ‘stalkers’—young thrill-seekers who sneak in to pursue post-apocalyptic video game-inspired fantasies. Why the film’s central characters, Hanna Zavorotyna, Maria Shovkuta, and Valentyna Ivanivna, chose to return after the disaster, defying the authorities and endangering their health, is a remarkable tale about the pull of home, the healing power of shaping one’s destiny and the subjective nature of risk.

This video animation uses a fictive camera tracking shot to offer an insight into the spaces of a traditional Japanese house, composed of fragments of very different rooms, which the artist lived in during her stay in Japan. This was combined with excerpts from old Ukiyo-e’s and scenes from Kabuki-theatre. In her work Claudia Larcher deals with rooms and spaces that for her are connected with feelings of home, familiarity and memory. “Heimat” (home) stands for identity, connection and history in the sense of a lived past. Therefore the spaces that the artist examines are on the one hand topographical givens, but on the other spaces of memory and imagination.
