A Book and a Party: Johannes Spalt 90th birthday
On 29 September 2010 Johannes Spalt celebrates his 90th birthday — a fitting occasion to honour him with a publication by the Az W: ‘Wahlverwandtschaften / Elective Affinities’ (Residenz Verlag). Johannes Spalt is one of the best-known representatives of the Austrian architecture scene after 1945. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts under Clemens Holzmeister, following an intensive engagement with the modern movement Spalt felt himself drawn to Adolf Loos and Josef Frank. His lifelong “thinking with history” resulted in an undogmatic oeuvre with a pluralistic approach manifested in the specifically Austrian connection between tradition and modernity. His ongoing engagement with subjects like mobile furniture, housing, small architecture (such as Salettl garden shelters) characterise his architectural work.
