This publication on Rudolf Wäger’s work captures his life and work in many shades: Wäger – the autodidact and researcher, the mastermind and planner, the craftsman and architect, the builder and admonisher. In the last weeks before his death, Rudolf Wäger was able to select the buildings that he considered decisive for his work. They form the main strand of the book.

Three superordinate layers, enriched by essays by Otto Kapfinger and Roland Gnaiger as well as interviews with interlocutors still selected by Wäger, structure the key works. Two colleagues and companions, Wolfgang Juen and Bruno Spagolla, contribute their personal perceptions, as does Otto Jungwirth, friend and artist in Vienna.

In this monograph, Martina Pfeifer Steiner and Marina Hämmerle, as authors, dedicate themselves for the first time to the work of a pioneer of this highly regarded building culture movement in Vorarlberg. Markus Gohm, himself an architect and photographer, explores Rudolf Wäger’s buildings photographically in their spatial and cultural context.

Further documentation is provided by plans, detailed drawings and photos from Wäger’s estate, which the Az W Architekturzentrum Wie made available with its collection. The book is published by Birkhäuser Verlag in cooperation with vai Vorarlberger Architektur Institut and Az W Architekturzentrum Wien.
