As a whole, this collection presents an essential distillation of the current architectural landscape, once again illustrating the outstanding achievements od designers and builders in pursuit of a well-designed living environment.
The edition “Best of Austria 2018_19” was largely put together during the shutdown of the Covid-19 crisis, and the pandemic’s impact on society and building activity cannot yet be gauged. The enormous influence of building culture – taking a broad view of the designed environment – on individual and community quality of liefe has already been clearly demonstrated: it ranges from specifications for living and working spaces, to questions on urban development, zoning, and climate planning.
The buildings are presented with photos, selected plans and short texts by renowned authors. Outstanding individuals, architectural teams and architectural institutions are honored in short portraits. An introductory essay by Matevž Čelik offers an analysis of Austrian architecture and building culture as an external view. The book is rounded off by a detailed index that includes all relevant information on the awards.
