Haus der Statistik
IBA_Vienna meets Architects #6
How can large-scale, modern postwar buildings be transformed socially, culturally and technologically? The Haus der Statistik in Berlin is developing an exemplary project for urban development that benefits the public.
In this collaborative event on New Social Housing, the Az W and the IBA_Vienna invite international architects and projects that take new directions, this year with the focus on postwar modernism.
The Haus der Statistik on Berlin’s Alexanderplatz was built in 1968-1970 as the headquarters of the GDR State Central Bureau of Statistics, and has stood empty for a good ten years. A broad alliance of initiative-takers from civil society and the Mitte District want to convert the ensemble of buildings, comprising approx. 46,000 square metres GFA, cost-effectively and conserving resources. Alongside communal housing, spaces are being completed for art, culture, education and businesses, as well as ‘The Town Hall of Tomorrow’. Representatives of the cooperative ZUsammenKUNFT report on their ideas for solidarity in a sustainable cosmopolitan city, and on current workshop proceedings. The Haus der Statistik is also presented in the Az W exhibition ‘Critical Care’.
