The house built by Walter Pichler for his cousin in Birchabruck in Eggental provides the occasion for an unusual trip to South Tyrol. The House Next To The Smithy is the result of “memories” for Pichler, it is equally a trip back following the traces of his childhood, which was abruptly interrupted by forced relocation to North Tyrol. The changes in political situation since 1919 are manifested in Bolzano by comprehensive plans produced in Fascist Italy. Current architectural and urban development practise in Bozen frequently stands in close connection to the historical heritage, and contributes significantly to the ambivalence and heterogeneity of the town.
